If you want more traffic on your website or blog, you might consider running a contest. It can produce not only return traffic but also viral traffic.

Let me explain. If your website or blog is setup in the right manner, you might be able to have a monthly contest that will create return traffic and viral traffic and, of course, a website lives or dies by it’s traffic. As an example, I have a content digital photography website. Each month I run a digital photo of the month contest for my readers. If a person wins the contest, I publish their photo along with what ever contact information they want on the site for the following month. What happens is that not only do they become regular readers of my website but, they tell all of their friends about winning the contest and where they can view the winning picture. At the end of the year, I actually give out a cash prize and republish their picture of the year photo for the month of January. Such a simple way to increase traffic.

Among other sites that I have is a blog which contains content about shoestring marketing. On the blog, I run an article of the month contest. Whoever submits the best article on shoestring marketing will be published on the blog along with the authors name and a link to their website or blog. Only article with serious shoestring marketing tips are accepted and there can be no plugs for affiliate programs contained within the article. Of course, at the end of the article is their signature and a link to their primary website or blog. Affiliate sales pages are not accepted, only the author’s primary content website and or blog.

It really is a win/win situation. I get free traffic and content and the author gets added traffic to their website or blog along with displaying their expertise. They also help promote my blog virally by telling all of their friends where they can view their article.

It is a simple method, it costs you nothing and both you and your reader get more exposure.

O.K., your web site is finally up and working smoothly. Your sales page is fantastic. You have a great product you really believe in. But nobody’s buying…anything! Why?

Imagine yourself in this scenario. You are new in town and you want to make some friends, so you throw a party - and no one shows up.

Before you get your feelings hurt, ask yourself this –

• Did you send out any invitations?
• Did you give them directions to your place?
• Did you give them a reason to want to come?

How does this equate to your Internet Marketing business?

Invitations = Advertising. It can be free, or paid advertising, but you have to let people know that your web site exists. Blogs, articles, forums, and social networking are forms of free advertising. Actually, none of these are really free. If you put a dollar value on your time, they can be quite expensive. As a rule of thumb, if you have more money than time, use paid advertising. If you have more time than money, use free advertising.

• Give them directions = Links to your web site. Use the rule of thumb, above. Pay per click advertising can be expensive, but it is effective. Article writing/blogging is not expensive, but it is time consuming. You must be the judge.
• Why will they want to come? Free food and drinks will work at your party. Free e-books and other ‘gifts’ will work on your web site, BUT always over-deliver. Offering stale e-books and worthless ‘gifts’ to your subscribers is like passing out stale pretzels and tap water at your party. In either case, they may show up, but they won’t stay long and they will never come back!
• Remember, you are trying to make friends, not just get people to show up. Give them a reason to come. Give them a reason to stay. Give them a reason to come back.
• Your invitation, (advertising), must give people an idea of what to expect when they get there. If it does, the people who show up will feel comfortable, will be interested, and will stay a while. If it is misleading, your guest will feel like a man who accidentally finds himself in the ‘ladies’ room, or a guy in a three piece suit who walks into a Biker’s bar.
• Don’t have a cover charge. You are trying to meet people and make new friends. Hitting them up for money at the door won’t work. Let them get to know you before you try to sell them something. If they are interested in you they will give you their name and number, (e-mail). This can be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. It’s up to you!

When you change what you think about and the way you look at things that happen to you - well… the things CHANGE! Sure, there is more to it than that of course, but I can say with confidence that more times than not the winners focus on the PRIZE and not on the obstacles between them an the prize.

Change your focus - optimize your outlook and good things will happen more often! It works for me and I know it can work for you! It’s true!

Don’t worry, this article and the articles that follow in this series about free search engine traffic are not strictly motivational in nature. They are really about getting tons of free search engine traffic. Are you stuck in a rut that you can’t seem to get out of?

Are you caught up in information overload? Are you skeptical about the possibility of making money from free search engine traffic? In a sense I can’t blame you. Many products out there are distracting you and taking your focus off the things that will make your dreams reality. In order to achieve success you need to boil down your efforts to the core tasks that will focus energy and bring you results.

I’m not suggesting that you avoid learning and coaching and instruction, but I am asking that you pick a system and follow that path with focus and positive energy. Avoid taking in too much advice and remember that differing opinions can dissolve the power of your focus.

The biggest problem I see people run into is that they get confused and overwhelmed because they take in too much information from too many sources. Instead of applying a system and sticking with it till they reach success, I see many people trying a scattered approach and then they get negative and feel like it’s not possible to be a winner. The result is they often will stall and stop trying.

You need to take action but it must be targeted action with a focus on the goals you set.

Unless you take action and apply the things you learn, and set things in motion, you really can’t expect money to magically fall into your lap, can you?

Yes, it may be possible that there are reasons why you SHOULDN’T BE SUCCESSFUL. I can’t deny a few of those reasons may exist.

But I guarantee you, if you get those “negative” pessimistic reasons out of your thoughts and mind, and alternately focus on all the MILLIONS of reasons why you potentially DESERVE TO BE SUCCESSFUL, that SUCCESS WILL FIND YOU, BEFORE it finds someone who isn’t asking for it.

How badly do you want to be successful??? If you want it bad - then ask for it! Think about it! Imagine it! You need work for it! Do the kind of things that people who already have what you want, have been doing to become successful and I promise you - you will find yourself having the things you have been thinking of.

There is a great old saying that goes something like: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t - either way you are right”

If you want to achieve top rankings and get lots of free search engine traffic coming to your web pages you need to focus on the core things that will help you attain this. In my training and video materials I try to get people to focus on 2 core things:
1) Build pages
2) Get links

Sure, you can spend your time on any of a number of other things, but to me, the fastest path to success in web publishing is focusing on getting the best words you can onto web pages and then promoting those pages by making efforts to get other web sites to link to your pages.

Those 2 activities, while not the only activities, will bring you the greatest returns on your efforts. Keep adding new fresh web pages to your web sites and keep working to get links pointing at your web pages. You almost can’t help but get top rankings and soon you’ll have targeted visitors spending time on your web pages and hopefully taking action and making you money!

Now, that brings us to an entirely different task you need to be aware of and that is monetizing your web sites. Monetization is done in a number of ways and can include selling advertising or promoting products (your own or those of others). Savvy web publishers will take this a step further and also try to build a “mailing list” of subscribers whom can be contacted in the future by email. While those topics deserve a longer discussion, you should realize that as time goes on you perfect those things and achieve better returns on your efforts. Start with adding lots of great content to your web sites and getting links to them and as you achieve small victories towards success, you’ll gain insight and personal experience which will help you achieve the goals you aspire towards.

‘What is the best traffic generation source?’ There is no right answer to this question.

One person says article marketing. The next will say pay per click. Another will say blogging. There is no end to this argument. It will probably go on as long as ecommerce is around. Horses for courses. You have got to find out the best traffic generation that works for your business. No business is 100% the same.

One target market will have a different behaviour than another market. One market might frequent article directories a lot or use search engines a lot. while another just surfs video sites and scouts for Ebay bargains all day. One market might sign up to a lot of lists, another market barely.

You have to do a dry run for 5 to 10 traffic sources. Test these sources for a week or two, then quantify your results - the leads you got, your conversion rates, how much traffic you got as a whole.
